Leg Day Workout: 6 Exercises for Stronger, Bigger Legs

A strong lower body is the foundation of a powerful physique. This workout targets the major muscles of your lower body, including your quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. It combines compound exercises with targeted movements so you can train your legs.

1. Barbell Squat

The barbell squat is the main exercise in this leg day workout. It primarily targets the quadriceps and glutes while also training the hamstrings and core.

Place the bar securely across your upper back and stand with your feet around shoulder-width apart. Brace your core, bend your knees and hips, and lower your body under control. Drive through your feet to return to the starting position.

Perform 4 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions, resting 2 to 3 minutes between sets. Use a weight you can control.

2. Romanian Deadlift

The Romanian deadlift is excellent for training the hamstrings and glutes.

Hold a barbell in front of your thighs. Keep your back neutral and push your hips backward while lowering the bar close to your legs. Stop when you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings, then drive your hips forward to stand tall.

Complete 4 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions with about 2 minutes of rest. Move slowly and avoid rounding your back.

3. Leg Press

The leg press lets you train your lower body with a stable setup. It places strong emphasis on the quads while also working the glutes and hamstrings.

Sit securely in the machine and position your feet comfortably on the platform. Lower the platform with control, then press it away without aggressively locking your knees.

Aim for 4 sets of 10 to 12 repetitions and rest around 90 seconds.

4. Lying Leg Curl

The lying leg curl gives your hamstrings direct attention.

Lie face down on the machine and position your ankles under the pads. Curl your heels toward your glutes, squeeze your hamstrings briefly, and lower the weight slowly.

Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 repetitions with 60 to 90 seconds of rest. Avoid momentum and keep the movement smooth.

5. Leg Extension

Leg extensions isolate the quadriceps and are a simple way to finish the front of your thighs.

Sit in the machine with your knees aligned with its pivot point. Extend your legs until they are comfortably straight, pause briefly, and lower the weight under control.

Do 3 sets of 12 to 15 repetitions with about 60 seconds of rest. Use moderate resistance and focus on your quads.

6. Standing Calf Raise

Your calves deserve attention too. Standing calf raises target the muscles that help you push through your feet.

Stand securely on the machine or platform and lower your heels into a comfortable stretch. Then push through the balls of your feet and raise your heels as high as possible.

Perform 4 sets of 12 to 20 repetitions with 45 to 60 seconds of rest. Pause briefly at the top instead of bouncing.

Final Thoughts

Keep each repetition controlled and focus on the muscles doing the work throughout every set.

This leg day workout gives you a balanced approach to building stronger, more muscular legs. Squats, Romanian deadlifts, leg presses, curls, extensions, and calf raises cover the major lower-body muscle groups.
